Now over 200 years old, the Berners Street Hoax is one of the oldest pranks in recorded history. We’ve all heard of the revenge prank of calling for a pizza delivery, or other similar home delivery, and having it delivered to another address.
This is exactly what happened in 1809 when Theodore Hook made a bet with his friend Samuel Beazley that he could make any house in London the most popular house in the city. He achieved this by sending out thousands of letters in the name of a Mrs Tottenham, who lived at 54 Berners Street, and invited to the residence on a specific day.
The letters were sent to chimney sweeps, coal yards, cake makers, fishmongers, shoemakers, doctors, lawyers and vicars. When the day arrived Berners Street became so busy with people visiting the address that other parts of London became congested. The Governor of the Bank of England, the Duke of York, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lord Mayor of the City of London even arrived in Berners Street, and the deliveries and visitors continued to arrive well into the evening.
Hook and Beazley watched all this from the house directly opposite 54 Berners Street. Unfortunately there’s no record of Mrs Tottenham’s reaction. It must have been a very bizarre day indeed for her.
